Profile
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
After studying at The University of Central Lancashire and winning D&AD Student of the Year for a point of sale campaign for Paul Smith, I joined The Chase in 1997. Since starting in Manchester I moved to London in 2002 to co-form the London studio with Harriet Devoy (ex Preston). In 2006 I was made Creative Director of the London studio working closely with clients such as Land Securities, BBC, Royal Mail, British Council and Ingenious Media. In 2008 I returned to the north and now head up my own team back in the Manchester studio working with Rio Tinto, AstraZeneca and The Co-operative Group.
Career highlights have included a Gold from the New York Art Directors Club, A Design Week award, Silver nominations from D&AD and, of course, the D&AD Student award.

A piece of advice
Being at Preston and after a decade of working in the industry, a decent idea is central to what we do, no matter where you get it from. An idea can come from anywhere. Don’t forget to look for them.

Portfolio
I’ve selected the following five projects. I guess these are the projects that I’m most proud of…

2008 Chase Christmas gift
Letters to make up the message ‘Merry Christmas’ were sourced from old wooden blocks of type. From each letter a mould was taken, then handed to a chocolatier. Three blends of chocolate were experimented with, mimicking the well-used surface of the original wooden type forms.
The presentation box acts as an old printer’s chase (a pun on the company’s name). Made from thick cardboard the box is hand-folded with foil type. The seasonal message is made complete— and the pun, by printing around the corner of the box.

Coastal Erosion
This self-promotional book for photographer Jason Orton documented Britain’s eroding coastline. What better way to display this, than in a book where the pages erode by themselves.

Manchester Dogs Home Annual Review
Our brief was to create an Annual Review that could also work as a promotional brochure. The report illustrating all the hard work done by the cash strapped dogs home with wit and clearly communicated the service provided. The success of the review led to rise in donations to the charity. It also had lots of pretty dogs on the cover which the grannies loved.

Bag for the National Football Museum
Any merchandise bought in the museum shop can be placed in the Football Museum bag. The handles make up the goalposts in this Preston North End game.

Southwark Bridge for Land Securities
In preparation for the official unveiling of a major new piece of public art by artist, Ian Davenport, featuring ‘poured lines’ of colour, we designed a 50 meter long promotional poster that painted the town red and yellow and green and crimson and…
