The long bus journey’s to and from placement every day can drag on and passing the time can be hard. A good book can really help turn a somewhat unproductive activity into an enjoyable on. Currently I’m reading Russian philosopher Ayn Rand’s book “The Virtue of Selfishness” , which is a collection of essays she wrote exploring the ethics of her philosophy; objectivism. Whilst reading I came to an interesting section in which Rand talks about concepts and how beneficial they are to the survival of man. Concepts are an intriguing subject to me and one that I feel is important in the world of design, without good concepts we would have no good design. Conjuring good concepts can also be a troubling task and so an understanding of them can be very beneficial in aiding their creation. Below is the extract from her book, which hopefully will help you all in understanding concepts more and how they can come about. The main thing I feel to take from this is the fact that concepts and ideas don’t come to you automatically, you have to find them yourself.

A “concept” is a mental integration of two or more perceptual concretes, which are isolated by a process of abstraction and united by a means of specific definition. Every word of mans’ language, with the exception of proper names, denotes a concept, an abstraction that stands for an unlimited number of concretes of a specific kind. It is by organizing his perceptual material into concepts, and his concepts into wider and still wider concepts that man is able to grasp and retain, to identify and integrate an unlimited amount of knowledge, a knowledge extending beyond the immediate perceptions of any given, immediate moment. Man’s sense organs function automatically; man’s brain integrates his sense data into percepts automatically; but the process of integrating percepts into concepts – the process of abstraction and of concept-formation – is not automatic.

The process of concept-formation does not consist merely of grasping a few simple abstractions, such as “chair,” “table,” “hot,” “cold,” and of learning to speak. It consists of a method of using ones consciousness, best designated by the term “conceptualizing.” It is not a passive state of registering random impressions. It is an actively sustained process of identifying one’s impressions in conceptual terms, of integrating every event and every observation into a conceptual context, of grasping relationships, differences, similarities in one’s perceptual material and of abstracting them into new concepts, of drawing inferences, of making deductions, of reaching conclusions, of asking new questions and discovering new answers and expanding one’s knowledge into an ever-growing sum. The faculty that directs this process, the faculty that works by means of concepts, is: reason. The process is thinking.

Well, Rupert Ray is the name of a design agency co-founded by Alex Maclean and Caroline Matthews.

In launching the agency the question on everyone’s lips was always ‘Who is Rupert Ray’

The question was posed to a list of invited artists to illuminate the historical character or to invent a new myth. Each of the artists responses tells us something about
the character and something about the artist.

Last night I went along to find out, hosted at Mother headquarters which was the perfect space for the exhibition.

The walls were draped in each artists interpretation of Rupert Ray, from artist such as NomaBar to Alison Carmichael.

Adrian Johnson : Who Is Rupert Ray

I kind of made it up as I went along without really thinking about it. It’s more like a paper cut out and pencil doodle – which is really fun and liberating to do.

Noma Bar : Who is Rupert Ray

We didn’t know until today that Rupert discoverd that by growing a moustache he could express himself graphically & personally, So with the help of the moustache he created 2 r’s which become his trade mark. A year later he was copied by his neighbour charles entwistle, that tried to shape his moustache in ‘c’ shape (which looked pretty good) & very a forced ‘e’ on the right.

Paul Belford : Who is Rupert Ray

‘R’ is for Rupert (or Ray I suppose). A Clarendon lowercase ‘r’ becomes an
inquisitive, perhaps slightly surprised eye, looking leftwards. The portrait is completed by a full stop and a comma.

Malika Favre : Who is Rupert Ray

“Ray” Rupert is a bit of a mystery.
She is a spy, sassy and intriguing and noone knows her real name or even where she comes from. She moonlights as a clown when she is off duty.

Sarah Maycock : Who is Rupert Ray

It’s a drawing of my grand father. After being blown out of tanks in WWII he then ran an art school in Germany, before returning to his postponed RCA
place where he met my grand mother in the materials queue on the first day.
A hugely inspirational man.

Charles de Grussa : Who is Rupert Ray

The census form was a reaction to the question ‘Who is Rupert Ray?’ The form has been adapted slightly and left blank so that the public can answer the questions themselves and tell us who Rupert Ray is.

Bob London : Who is Rupert Ray

Rupert likes drinking ale and bare-knuckle boxing.

Off the back of the recent logo reveal on CR Blog and the ‘connection’ to the well known pizza delivery company, it was taken on the chin with the serving of pizza and beer on the night.

“I’ve been trying to make images that cannot be imaged; make visual art that cannot be seen, but instead might exist invisibly beneath the analytical perceptual mechanisms of vision.’

Yep! The other day I took a trip to the recently redeveloped Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney.

Over $53m has been spent on the redevelopment which includes a modern extension as well as classrooms, a sculpture terrace and café.

If i’m honest not all contemporary art floats my boat and the work on show here was no different but I have picked out a few of the pieces I found most interesting – no doubt we will all have different opinions.

For $53m it still all feels a bit neutral and bland, from a branding perspective and architecturally. Perhaps this was intentional to let the exhibits take the centre stage…but at times it just felt like any other gallery space. Considering it sits alongside the harbour looking over two of the world’s most famous landmarks perhaps more could have been done!

Nevertheless if you happen to be in Sydney check it out and have a coffee on the terrace at the end.
