HandpaintedType is a project that is dedicated to preserving the typographic practice of street painters around India. These painters, with the advent of local DTP (Desktop Publishers) shops, are rapidly going out of business with many of them switching to the quicker, cheaper but uglier vinyls. Many painters have given up their practice altogether.
The project involves documenting the typefaces of road side painters across India and digitizing it so that it serves as a resource for present and future generations.

It’s that time of year again. There’s something about the festive season that says self promotion here at ico.

Last year we designed a website that automatically turned all of the tweets with the hashtag ‘xmas’ into typographic snowflakes, and displayed them as falling digital snow. From this we could also extract individual tweets which enabled us to send unique Christmas cards to friends and clients.

The next logical step was to create a physical document of these global digital communications. With this in mind, we recorded all the Twitter messages sent on 25th December 2010. We then took the unusual route of using Processing to layout all 6651 tweets and tweetflake illustrations across the cloth bound tome’s pages. Arranged in chronological order, the book becomes a work of reference. Look closer and each tweet holds its own personal sentiment. Whether serious, touching, funny, ridiculous, or just plain rude, together the messages paint an honest picture of modern-day views and values associated with the festive season.

Are you one of the 6651? find out here.

Yesterday we launched a new brand for Alzheimer’s Australia. The disease has been dubbed ‘the invisible epidemic’ due to the scale of the problem and lack of awareness associated with it. By 2030 Alzheimer’s Disease will kill more Australian’s than any other disease (more than cancer) and no one really knows anything about it. The general perception is that Alzheimer’s is just about memory loss, or a natural part of getting old. When in reality, the desease completely shuts down the functionality of your body. It is terminal and – there is no cure. Ridiculously, it isn’t even recognised by the Australian government as a chronic disease (which massively effects the level of funding received). Yesterday we marched with Ita Buttrose (pictured) and 500 hundred other people on Parliament House in Canberra, to launch the new brand and to fight for recognition.

The brand is designed to create a national movement, not just another campaign. It features a flexible logo that changes and evolves to communicate different messaging – like an ongoing conversation. The identity is very bold, simple and clear, and deliberately cost effective to implement. Using two colours and often, just four words.

It’s a very verbal, typographic brand. This negates the problem of having to buy lots of images (it’s a charity after all). The tone of voice is direct. But whenever we have something negative to say, we always back it up with a positive, a strong call to action…

In the last 24 hours the launch has generated lots of positive publicity. With increased funding being debated in parliament yesterday as a direct result of our campaign pressure. The story also ran on the ABC showpiece current affairs program – the 7:30 report (here). We also made Sky News (although they spelt dementia wrong).

It’s a project we’re very passionate about for obvious reasons. And for me, projects like this, just go to show, that being a designer isn’t about shifting more product. It’s not about decoration either. It’s about giving people a voice. People who may lack funding, or expertise, but have something important to say…

The Alzheimer’s team: Joao, Jefton, David, Chris, Mike, Rashna, plus Dean and Chris Doyle who couldn’t be there.

A “Comedy Carpet” featuring the catchphrases, jokes and names of more than 1,000 comedians has been unveiled at the foot of Blackpool Tower.

It features 160,000 individually-cut letters spelling out the phrases. The engraved letters vary in size from a few centimetres, to almost a metre in height, so the piece can be seen nearby and also from a height – at the top of Blackpool Tower.

The installation was designed by artist Gordon Young and design studio Why Not Associates.

The beautiful letters were cut from granite and concrete and then arranged on paper layout sheets and concrete poured around them to set them into paving slabs.

The installation was also featured in Creative Review this month, and to pay homeage to it, CR asked Andy Altmann of Why Not to take their coverlines and create a layout. He had the letters cut at the same Hull factory and then shot the result at PSC in London.

I wish I was still in Preston, so I could nip over and check it out!

“All Hail The King” designed by b-positive, printed by tind.

Based in Athens, Greece “Tind” (AKA Manolis Aggelakis and family) has been in touch with TDOD regarding his silk screen printing work.

tind stands for “This Is Not Designed”, we embrace the motto “everything is going according to NO plan” and we stand under no manifesto. We strongly believe that creativity and technicality go hand in hand in our business so we enjoy both designing and producing projects with main emphasis on right design instead of good design. We use silkscreen and program coding as our main form of expression thought we always search and intergrate new forms of technology in our armory, so we can push projects further one step at the time. We are thinkers, solvers and the expediters of your dreams.
