Samuel Aguiar, founder and designer of french based Shiny Hammer contacted TDOD regarding his work.

The primary purpose of Shiny Hammer is the creation of furniture for your home. At the border between use and art, the brand’s aim comes from the desire to create unconventional and timeless objects.

PLEE CHAIR
This chair is the result of a manufacturing process developed by Shiny Hammer called C.I.M. which is aimed at using a bending process which is rough yet sophisticated. The end result is unpredictable, although controlled. As a result, each chair is unique.

SHONE LIGHT
Limited edition of 10 copies. Inspired by the world of aeronautics, Shone is a timeless fixture suspended by metal wires. Like a piece of jewelry, its faceted body contains a light source set within the structure. When lit, it projects an ambient light towards the ceiling, reflecting both on the ceiling and on the various surfaces around Shone.

LOOP TABLE
The profile is transparent and defined by a line which is in opposition to the other angles. The harmony of this coffee table is the result of an assembly without visible joints and an interior finish crafted with the same care as the exterior. Its simplicity offers great versatility.

LOOP STOOL
This re-interpretation of a familiar shape of stool makes this design both iconic and endearing. This object can be both used as a stool or as a side table.

TILE LIGHT
This fixture is the perfect fusion of two domains : crafts and computing. It is composed of 570 aluminum parts that are laser-cut and assembled one by one by hand. The lighting is composed of three light bulbs that project light towards the floor and through all the facets.

DALLAS
Limited edition of 10 copies. Both functional and decorative, Dallas is a safe, an eccentric sculpture on a scale of 1. This piece combines several quality materials such as aluminum and leather.

Check out the full site here, where you can also place an order. C’est magnifique!

Monopole is the worlds oldest and most expensive Champagne. Originally planned to ship to the Russian Imperial family in 1916, the ship was wrecked off the coast of Finland and the cargo lost at sea. In 1997, divers found the wreck and incredibly, recovered over 200 bottles. Today, you can buy a bottle at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Moscow for approximately $275,000 (169,695 GBP) a bottle. Incredible story (and price tag).

The absolute genius that is Wieden & Kennedy have released their latest bit of work for Nike. The Nike ‘Better World’ site uses the supposed replacement to Flash, HTML5 and the results are visually beautiful. Better World is the environmental and social responsibility arm of Nike, which is there to try and reassure the world that they aren’t still using child labour and unethical practices. It is good to see a organisation as big as Nike actually trying to make a difference, the fact that this strategy is absolutely nothing new and that they are jumping on the most popular band wagon of the moment is completely forgotten, just because they make it look so bloody good.

The Better World site is here but also check out W&K here.

With the demise of so many traditional craft skills due to the onslaught of modern technology, I was happy to come across this company based in San Francisco who are using it to their advantage.

The aptly named ‘Dodo Case’ is preserving the art of book binding by creating covers for iPads and Kindles. More information and purchases here.

From the packaging archive – Classic Fine Fare Yellow Pack .

First launched in March 1980 and distinctively packaged in yellow with aggressive black print, under a brand name “Yellow price packs” by the Collett Dickenson Pearce advertising agency. Subsequently copied by all the major supermarkets, the yellow pack was a revolutionary concept in food marketing.
