THE FREEDOM TUNNEL

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010 by Mike Rigby

Some beautiful photography from Carlito Brigante of the Freedom tunnel. Built under Manhattan’s Upper West side in the 30’s and used for only a few years before being discontinued. It became a haven for street people and graffiti artists.

…the tunnel turned into a veritable underground metropolis where thousands of homeless were living in organized communities underneath the city’s skin. The tunnel also became a prime spot for graffiti artists. Immense murals appeared utilizing the unique lighting provided by the ventilation ducts, turning the tunnel into an extraordinary underground art gallery.

In 1991, Amtrak decided to reopen the tunnel. The shanty towns were cleared out by the police and homeless were evicted. Although deserted, the tunnel is now an active train line and a stunning experience for urban explorers.

Read the full story and see the rest of the images on Carlitto’s flickr page.

MARDALE

Monday, July 12th, 2010 by AndyB

The Village of Mardale was flooded in 1935 as the Manchester Water Corporation built the Haweswater Dam. A whole community was up rooted never to return, even the bodies were exhumed from the church grave yard. But every now and again during extended dry spells remnants and evidence of this former community and the village re-appear. Some say that on a still summers evening you can still hear the haunting sound of the old church bell tolling across the valley.
