Dan Freebairn (1st year graphics student) has been in touch about his contribution to the CitID project.

Here is a brief explanation of the project:

Our hope is that creatives from around the globe will make a logo or a visual interpretation of the city closest to their heart. The universal goal is that every city ultimately gets their own identity on CitID, and that both the city and it’s aesthetic contributor gets recognition through this library – a place where you come for visual inspiration and leave with more knowledge about the world we live in.

Dan’s solution for Manchester (above) can be seen here on the site along with his portfolio.

Thanks for sending this Dan.

Many congratulations to UCLAN 1st year digital design student Andreas Lindén for his success in the recent Big Chip Awards. With his work on the Nosey Parker iPhone app.

Produced after winning a placement at Manchester based digital design agency Stardotstar the app cleaned up in both the professional and student catagories.

‘Nosey Parker’ is the only car park location application for the iPhone covering the UK. It gives the user the nearest and safest locations, cheapest prices and further details of over 13,400 car parks – that is 1,8 million car parking spaces – across the country. With an estimated 16,000 car parks in the UK, ‘Nosey Parker’ gives the user access to the largest and most up-to-date database on the iPhone. Reached no.23 in the Apple Apps Store on 2/3/2010. Project produced on work placement at Stardotstar, Manchester.

3 OUT OF 4

Monday night TV was pretty good for a change. On BBC FOUR, The Gold Smiths programme “But Is It Art?” follows the trials and tribualtions of its fine art students. Then there was a great show “Time Shift” about the development of the art school and some of its famous graduates (why not available on iPlayer BBC?). After that a documentary about Brian Duffy who was one of the greatest photographers of his generation. Along with David Bailey and Terence Donovan he defined the image of the 1960s and was as famous as the stars he photographed. Then suddenly in the 1970s he disappeared from view and burned all his negatives. Try and catch em if you can.

JohnnyCash1969

If this works it will be amazing! The Johnny Cash Project is a global collective art idea, asking individuals to contribute to a video. You can create a unique and personal portrait of Johnny. Your work will then be combined with art from participants around the world, and integrated into a collective whole: a music video for “Ain’t No Grave”, rising from a sea of one-of-a-kind portraits. Participate here, no bright colours though!

10 PENNETH

Friend of TDOD Craig Oldham (working at Manchester’s Music) has just released this publication featuring 10 short essays on Graphic Design. It’s an educational day-glo booklet, namely for students of Graphic Design, and is available from his site.

Craig explains:

Anyone who knows me will be the first to tell you that I’ve always got something to say. And by ’something to say’ they probably mean that I’m always whining about something—moan, grumble, hiss, whinge. That’s me. I do it for everything, so why stop at Graphic Design? Answer is, I didn’t.
10 Penneth is an accompaniment to a lecture series that I have given to students of Graphic Design and takes the form of ten (for lack of a better word—and I can’t understand why there isn’t one) maxims. These maxims take the form of short essays, each one being a lesson that’s an important thing to learn in order to help the students become better Graphic Designers, and in order for them to better understand the profession in which they are entering.
