In 1980 the D&AD launched its first ever student awards. In January of that year 74 heads of department from Art Colleges, Art Schools and Polytechnics from all over the United Kingdom came to London to receive briefs set by David Abbott, Chris Wilkins and Rod Springett.
The first submission consisted of 254 entries and the Graphics course at Preston was to sweep the board in all three catagories “setting the standard for others to follow”.
The judges were to comment ”there was one outstanding and very exciting presentation from Preston Polytechnic….the execution was excellent, they had thought through the briefs thoroughly and come up with some very original concepts”

Wonderful, let’s hope that this year we could be just as successful with the D&AD’s like they did in 1980. Come on you lot in year four, bring us some success and lets bring back preston to it’s glory days.
Being on placement this year has shown me reality. Graphic design in industry is not all about winning awards, reality is much harder so this is your best time to make a name for yourself before you fall in the real world of Graphic Design.
If they get their fingers out maybe &y b
Great!
Also – amazingly – Alan somehow looks younger now…
A lovely trip down memory lane. Great times. And thanks for the compliment Mike.
Oh, and where’s Sue Lee now?
