COUNTRY CODES

Posted by Billy

This is a piece of information graphics I decided to create back in 2006 just for fun. The idea came about after looking up a telephone (Subscriber Trunk Dialling) code on Google Maps UK to find out which part of the country the code covered and realising I could map the whole of the UK the same way. So in a moment of madness I set about creating the graphics. 5 years later and after cross referencing around 610 different area codes here is the result.

Now it’s finished I am not entirely sure what to do with it, but that’s often the case with these things. So I thought I’d at least share it here along with some chronological images of the project.

1. After downloading the codes I took screen grabs of segments of the UK from Google Maps and pasted them together in Photoshop to create a template for illustrator to work over.

2. I then began cross referencing the area codes with Google Maps and adding them to the map template in illustrator (click image to enlarge).

3. Some places were easier to find than others (click pics to enlarge).

4. After adding all the codes I decided to add graphic rings which also helped depict larger cities based on size/population.

5. The finished file with some colour added and the list of codes/areas.

6. Some detail shots and finished print.

    I thought the cross was maybe enough with the shape of the UK but I am open to suggestions and have probably looked at it for far too long.

    It’s taken 5 years to get it this far!

    @Jon, Thanks!
