Thanks to Robbie Laughton (Founder and Executive Creative Director – Dave) for sending TDOD this PDF.
When everything is the same how do you stand out? In many ways we all have to conform with societies rules and regulations whoever and whatever we are. Big consumer brands however fresh they want to be or how much they want to be seen to stand out of the crowd are still restricted by the same rule book as the next brand. Finding subtle ways to differentiate themselves is key. It’s something that takes me all the way back to the institution of school and how some kids were just cool and others weren’t however much they tried. So how did they do it when we were all trapped in the same uniform from top to toe?
A great five minute read with some lovely band badge ephemera to boot.
Wearing these badges (above) got you in Barnsley Boys Club for nothing. The bloke on the door was doing community service for fighting in town, he loved The Clash.
Thanks to Robbie for sharing this – TDOD.
Nice read robbie.
When the music and the youth had attitude. Sad to say neither now seems to exist. Well not that I’m aware of.
Too many people talking to each other faster, everyday, everywhere, anytime …….. about shit.
Hear, hear Mr B.
9 Encores, a lot of bands today don’t have 9 decent songs between them.
Oi, you really are bitter old men! ;)
I remember the badges from when I was kid, but I guess that they had lost all of that code language behind them unfortunately..
There is nothing bitter about it. It is simple the truth and it obviously hurts.
I’ve been in higher education lecturing in the art & design area for 10 years now and traditionally it has been rife with new ideas, trends and opinions. However I’ve seen fuck all rebellion, fuck all originality and fuck all focused conviction.
Maybe we have said it all and we have now entered an eternal steady state of banality. Prove me wrong somebody. Please.
By the way Andreas. They haven’t lost the ‘code language’ as you put it. It’s just that you need to educate yourself about an iconic era in the not too recent past. One that half the adult population of the country can still relate to and indeed lived.
You will be telling me next that Elvis isn’t rock and roll anymore?
Who is this Elvis you speak of?
