CLOUD ACROSS THE MERSEY

A SPINNING column of cloud rising above the Wirral coastline has been chosen as one of the first countdown events to the 2012 Olympics. Right near where I grew up!
Visible for up to 100km and stretching as high as the eye can see, Anthony McCall’s art work is programmed alongside major commissions by Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett, film director Mike Leigh, Turner Prize winner Rachel Whiteread and musician Damon Albarn.
The £500,000 art work is planned to first appear on New Year’s Eve, and remain in place throughout 2012 as a focal point for the North West’s Olympic involvement.
McCall, who has revealed new artist’s impressions of the work, said: “Wirral Waters’ cavernous estuary sky, constantly shifting weather and its available docks already makes it a compelling location for Column.
