FOOD AS ART

Posted by Jennie Spiller

Recently I seem to keep coming across food being used in lots of interesting ways, so I thought I’d post up a few here.

Firstly – Food Photography by Carl Kleiner & styled by Evelina Bratell. These photographs were commissioned by IKEA for a cookbook they have produced – called “Hembakat ar Bast” (Homemade is Best) the book is lavishly illustrated in a witty and functional fashion; sort of like their products… Brilliant idea to shoot it in this way & perfect for IKEA! In the book these raw ingredient images are shown along-side the finished product.

Here are some ‘foodscapes’ by Carl Warner. Carl Warner is a London-based photographer who makes foodscapes: landscapes made of food. The scenes are photographed in layers from foreground to background, as the process is very time-consuming and the food quickly wilts under the lights.

Below is work from Joost Elffers and Saxton Freymann. The collaborators have written over a dozen books together, all of them tackling the subject of playing with your food and turning everyday fruits and vegetables into incredibly cute animals and anthropomorphic characters.

Here is some stuff from Bomas & Parr. “Bompas & Parr designs spectacular food experiences often working on an architectural scale with cutting edge technology. Projects explore how the taste of food is altered through synaesthesia, performance and setting. Bompas & Parr also designs and manufacturers bespoke jelly moulds and kitchenalia; makes fine English jellies; provides full catering services; and provides food and design consultancy.” They do some really cool stuff!
