MIKE DEMPSEY vs D&AD

Posted by Jordan Stokes

There is interesting post here on design legend Mike Dempsey’s blog this morning. Everyone loves a good old moan about D&AD every now and again (normally for not choosing their work or for having rubbish food at the ceremony), but this one actually has some valid ethical points to make. Hopefully the next target on the Dempsey hit list will be bloody paper companies for sending half a forests worth of packaging every time you order a sample. Maybe I’ll give that one a go.

If you don’t follow Mike Dempsey’s blog it’s really good and well worth a look.

  1. It is a very good point!

Something I think about quiet a bit. The design community are at the fore font of pointless waste & packaging, and it is us who will play a big part in trying to make things better. So D&AD should really be leading the way.

However, they do seem to be making some effort to make more use of the digital world.
And the annual may have got bigger, but there is no longer a separate student annual.

  2. Just been reading James Lovelocks The Revenge of Gia, any Lovelock publications are well worth a read by the way and according to his prognosis we’re all ‘going to hell in a handcart’ any road up. Bleak I know but ultimately probably true.

We may well be beyond the tipping point already, so any minor triflings about the waste of paper and its effect on the environment, carbon footprints and sustainability is pointless.

Want, need, desire, consume and die.

The scrapping of the Student Annual by D&AD is a travesty for those who looked up to what they stand for, giving a small section in the main annual is no consolation.
