I’VE A FEELING WE’RE NOT IN PRESTON ANYMORE

If you’re just graduating and, for want of a better phrase, shitting yourself a bit about finding work. I couldn’t recommend looking abroad enough.
I graduated from Preston 2 years ago, pretty much to the day, and I’m now a midweight at a small agency called Re, who work out of global advertising big bollocks M&C Saatchi, in Sydney – Australia
Nice neighbourhood
I’m now heavily involved in, amongst other things, a scarily large 4 year re-brand of the entire place, that being the country of Australia itself, the whole bloody shabang. We put together this (Slightly cheesy) video not long back for the launch.
Watch it, and prepare to want to move here. Good weather, good food, good people, lots of jobs, amazing beaches and, if you’re in fear of being home sick, there’s more English designers here than you can shake an ‘insert typically Australian thing here’ at. So look into it, it might just be the best thing you’ve ever done.
If not, at least you’ll leave with a tan and some proof you’re willing to go a long way for the chance to work in design.

Hi J,
If you are 30 or younger you can apply for a 1 year working holiday visa (417) from http://www.uk.embassy.gov.au. This allows you stay in OZ for 12 months and work for a period of no longer than 3 months at a time for a company. This should give you enough chance to get your portfolio round the agencies and an idea if you are good enough / up for working in OZ. Then if you want to stay and work you need to get sponsorship / business visa (457). The company that employs you should help with this or I think it is still possible to ‘self sponsor’ through a third party like these guys – http://www.pendragon.net.au. Hope this helps, good luck. Many thanks for that information! I’m 27, graduated last summer with a First/D&AD and still haven’t got into industry so am giving this some serious thought. Everyone’s always saying Aus is the place for English designers to go so…might try and let this article change my life! Best regards. J

Just to add a couple of notes to what Billy said (nice one for jumping in for me by the way)
You can work for up to 6 months at any one company now, they upped it from 3 months. But you can no longer sponsor yourself through a third party. You have to be sponsored by the company who employs you. That’s how I’m doing it at the moment and can be here for another 4 years if i want to.
I was in a similar position, First and a couple of student D&AD’s, but didn’t have much going on in England. I’ve come out here and never looked back.

thanks for replying, sorry for my delay I have been ‘sans mac’ for over a week. I don’t suppose I could email you about this could I – don’t want to turn your thread into the me show. Never know might be able to buy you a beer or whatever it is that goes on over there…a surfboard or something, if this works out for me :)
