The Village of Mardale was flooded in 1935 as the Manchester Water Corporation built the Haweswater Dam. A whole community was up rooted never to return, even the bodies were exhumed from the church grave yard. But every now and again during extended dry spells remnants and evidence of this former community and the village re-appear. Some say that on a still summers evening you can still hear the haunting sound of the old church bell tolling across the valley.
