GRAPHIC DESIGN NIGHT

Sunday, November 30th, 2008 by 2nd Year Graphics

From my records there hasn’t been a social event betwen the graphic department since the begining of time. I myself have had enough. The hand in date has been set for the 15th of december and therefore that gives us all an excuse to socialise. So get your people rounded up for one night, and sort yourself out for a graphic design social you’ll never forget.

We well be starting at source at 8pm for some drinks then moving on into town for what will hopefully be the start of a new begining.

be there…

HISTORIC

Thursday, November 27th, 2008 by AndyB

This image of a coffee machine was the first ever image transmitted over the world wide web. Why a coffee machine? Well the boffins involved in the development of the web were located on the floor above the coffee machine and they were sick of going down stairs for a coffee and finding that their brew was not ready. They decided to set up and train a camera on the machine in question so they could see when their brew was ready. Obvious really.

SCREEN SAVER SCAM

Thursday, November 27th, 2008 by AndyB

Top visual tip.

Dupe your boss into thinking that your computer has crashed and you need to get an engineer in to fix the problem by simple using the image above as a screen save. He’s taken in while you’ve got an excuse to put your feet up or get of work early and down the pub for a swift one.

If you have any more top visual tips then please post them up and spread the word.

VISITING SPEAKER

Thursday, November 27th, 2008 by AndyB

Ian McFarlane from the design group Spin will be at the University this Friday 5th December at 1pm to give a talk to all our graphics students. Ian is an ex graduate and has been working in London for the last 17 years in various high profile agencies. We look forward to seeing you all at the talk and in the pub afterwards for any informal questions you may have. We are very fortunate that Ian has agreed to come and give a talk and insight into his working practice, so we would expect a full house.

THE WALL

Monday, November 17th, 2008 by AndyB

Wall is a practical real time demonstration in the art of dry stone walling. Most of these basic boundary divisions date back to the passing of ‘The General Enclosures Act’ of 1760 -1845. They are unique to each landscape, subtly changing depending on the surrounding geology and the local techniques employed. The pink sandstone you see here is from the hamlet of Scout Green Westmorland, close to the river Birkbeck, a major tributary of the river Lune. It dates from the Pre-Cambrian era and therefore is around 3400 million years old.

Constructed following a few basic principles and with a minimum amount of tools, the discipline of dry stone walling is an intricate combination of; organization, rationalization, an eye for detail, shape, proportion & contemplation. Unlike a concrete wall, a dry stone wall is a flexible & permeable construction, that if made well should stand longer than the man who built it.
